The international outbreak of the Covid-19 has forced the world into a lapse in which the only hope lands in surviving to see how we can return to normal. However, the navigation through normal days must be taken slowly and be carefully guided to ensure they lead to leisure at summer time.
Today, Cuba offers a safe alternative for tourism and the time has come to say good bye to those sad days of a forced lockdown. Nevertheless, experience shows that a reopening should be flexible and gradual.
This is the reason why authorities established three main phases in the process of readjustment post-Covid.
The first phase includes a restoration of local tourism to meet the needs for the upcoming summer period.
The second phase would include the reentering of international tourists to destinations at the North and South cays of the Island. Due to geographic positioning and safety issues, the first places to start operating should be Cayo Santa María, Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo, Cayo Cruz and Cayo Largo del Sur. In addition, venues like Varadero and Trinidad will reopen gradually and according to demand. The Ministery of Tourism in Cuba (Mintur) along with the local sanitary authorities will determine the hotels that are likely to restart commercialization.
The third phase is intended to bring back to normal the remaining destinations, along with excursions to cities, and reopening private businesses such as restaurants, bars, and bed and breakfast accommodations (casas particulares).
Can we trust Cuba as a safe destination?
The main chains and hotel owners operating in Cuba have been updating protocols and measures. Several facilities and procedures had to be changed and readapted according to the guidelines set by the World Health Organization (WHO) in order to keep employees and guests safe.
Meliá Hotels International – Stay Safe with Meliá
In accordance with its program Stay Safe with Meliá, Meliá Hotels International guarantees the highest level of sanitation at their facilities and the safety of their staff and clients. The chain will carry out a thorough inspection of employees before they return to their jobs. On the other hand, it includes minute works in the field of sanity at every location. Concerning food, beverage and entertainment most processes had been renewed to meet the new standards.
Iberostar Hotels & Resorts – How we care
Having a 25-year experience in Cuba, Iberostar expects to be leading the reopening of the hotel services with “How we care”. A very promising plan that bases on a paperless campaign. It includes electronic check in and check out and e-concierge service 24 hours. Furthermore, they will widen the outside activities and reduce the number of individuals in groups or families. The Doctor Superhero is going to accompany kids to enforce the new social distance measures and teach them how to interact with others.
Cubanacan Hoteles
The hotel group is willing to take up to 150 measures endorsed by the local sanitary authorities. Their first approach is targeted to safety on their staff, who will be provided with every item needed for sanitation and healthcare. The project gives excessive importance to cleaning every vehicle before entering the facilities, and so with the local areas and contact surfaces. They foresee to change bar and snack bar services in order to offer a personalized service at the table. Menus will be replaced with boards or similar options; the company will also allow theirs guests to have room service 24 hours. Any extra linen will be removed from the room and delivered on request.
ACCOR – ALLSAFE
Accor, a French chain that operates in the Island, promotes its ALLSAFE solution. The company claims to have already achieved the highest standards of security at their Hotels. As their fellow enterprises they take care of their employees first, by teaching the new protocols to enhance a better performance in real life situations. Besides the promotion of social distancing, and providing clients with a hygiene kit, the access to desks will be mostly avoided. Concerning food and beverages, they will consider the proper distance between tables and provide items for disinfection.
Kempinski – With white gloves
Kempinski presents the program With White Gloves that requests the mandatory use of masks and gloves by the staff. They will also come up with all the social distance requirements and sanitation standards. In the same way these measures will be enforced at restaurants and bars. Clients will decide whether or not they want staff to enter the room. So, cleaning or maintenance services will be on request.
Along with the actions taken by every hotel group, the sanitary authorities in Cuba will provide every resort with medical services 24 hours. Their mayor purpose will be to care after both clients and employees in order to detect any symptom, and proceed with the settled protocols on time. They will also be in charge of the certifications of sanitation processes at local areas.
Cuba is positioned at the remarkable point in the new campaign of readapting to the new international sanitary events. We work every day to be able to fulfill our main goal, to be all safe when the race restart.
